Airline Takes Heat Over SI Swimsuit Promo on Side of 737

Bar Rafaeli splashing on Southwest Airlines jet draws passenger ire.

Here’s when a magazine marketing idea that sounds good on paper can backfire.

Southwest Airlines is taking some heat over the steamy picture of Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue cover model Bar Rafaeli splashed on the side of one of its commercial 737s.

Since the illustrated jet first hit the runway February 11, the airline has received angry letters and comments on its official blog about the SI tie-in promotion. “This looks like a flying porn ad,” one commenter wrote. “I'm a longtime fan of SWA, this is one reason for me to change airlines.”

“I find this tacky and somewhat offensive,” wrote another. “I am a twenty-something male, and I would not want to have to watch this plane pull up to the gate traveling with my young child, or mother, grandmother, etc. I know Southwest is known for its fun, laid back qualities, but this is just completely inappropriate to plaster all over the side of the plane.”

A Southwest spokesperson said about a quarter of the response it has received about the promotion so far has been negative. "As with anything that's different and unique, you do hear from some people who disagree," the spokesperson said. “We wanted to make sure it was in good taste before we put it up on the aircraft.”

Likening the image of Rafaeli to porn, however, is where I take exception. How different is this than a billboard on the side of a highway? Is it different than ads in fitness magazines? How about a day at the beach?

I’m not sure what SI publisher Time Inc. thinks about all the negative attention. A spokesperson did not return a request for comment today.

SI should be used to controversy when it comes to the marketing of its swimsuit issue, however. Mayor Bloomberg’s office, for example, tried to stop David Letterman from unveiling this year’s cover on a New York rooftop. (Their beef? Traffic.) Last year, even a Time Inc. staffer took issue with the issue (“Time Inc. Staffer Complains About SI Swimsuit Issue: ‘My Company Made Me Look at Porn’”).

And all this, by the way, from the airline that in 2007 booted a female passenger whose clothes it deemed were inappropriate (read: showing too much skin) for flight. Somewhat ironic, isn’t it?

Does anyone think SI or SWA didn't know this would be controversial? Does anyone remember the early days of SWA? Maybe this will help you jog your memory: http://blog.kosmonaut.net/images/2007/September/swa1970s.jpg

Psssst. Stay away from any beach or pool. You might accidentally be exposed to a REAL woman in a swimsuit.
Southwest is not holy either

I bet the people who complain watch porn a lot :) Southwest Airlines used to act holy before, previously they didn't allow a passenger because she was wearing a mini-skirt. What comes around goes around I guess.

At least they are not charging us for drinks, snacks, and to go to the bathroom. They have to make their money some kind of way. For goodness sake give them a break. If you don't want to fly Southwest because of this go to the more pricey airlines, they'll be glad to hear from you.

Oh, come on, I saw this plane land in Atlanta, the other day,and I laughed out load. I was woundering how they did such a great job. In this day and age, what's the harm. R.P.
Flying porn? Offensive?

Have these people been to a beach in the last 5o years? Who cares if SWA wants to put a picture of a woman in a bikini on their plane. It might only be offensive to those who are far, far too sensitive or are led t ofeel guilty by looking at an attractive woman on the side of a plane. I say good job to SI and SWA.

Who cares what a bunch of uptight stupid midwesterners think? Can't we move forward in this country without caring what the repressed hicks think. There's a reason they're called the FLY OVER states.

As a former Pacific Southwest Airlines flight attendant from the late 60's to the mid 70's, sex was what sold the airlines. As those who bore the brunt of the jokes and harassment, we were glad to see our efforts to bring some dignity to our jobs pay off. It was almost amusing to see Southwest Airlines copy our look and our company's business plan. Pacific Southwest should have stuck to theirs and wouldn't have been taken over by U.S. Air. We need to bring the fun back to flying, but not at the expense of the dignity of women. Let's try another "hook". For further history on Pacific Southwest Airline flight attendants, one can pull up old ads featuring real flight attendants on YouTube. FYI, the only non-employee is "Miss Long Beach".

What a sad commentary on an airline that was THE family airline (improved its image..from cocktail airline) ..now again to be the "Hooters" of the air. My business and family can't be associated with such a gutter image.

I remember when one of our flight attendants did an "air strip" of her uniform for a centerfold in Playboy inside one of our airplanes. Created a big flap, but invaluable free advertising for Pacific Southwest Airlines in October of 1973. SW had to give permission. I'm seeing a lot of tight sphincters out there. How far we have progressed since the early 1970s
