RiseUp, a weekly magazine with race-related content, is set to launch June 22 in major newspapers, carrying a four million circulation.

“The mission of RiseUp is to provide an ongoing conversation for all races and ethnicities to better understand each other and to build stronger communities, cities, nations and a better world,” founder and executive editor Janice Ellis tells FOLIO:.

RiseUp, which will be driven by national advertising, has secured several newspapers—including the New York Daily News, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune and the Houston Chronicle—to distribute the magazine. Ellis says she plans to look for additional partnerships and to increase RiseUp’s circulation to eight million this fall. By the first quarter 2009, circulation could be as high as 12 million, she says.

“Our goal is to spread this important conversation as broadly as we can.”

Printed on newspaper stock, Ellis has no plans to make RiseUp a glossy.

“The mission of RiseUp is to provide an ongoing conversation for all races and ethnicities to better understand each other and to build stronger communities, cities, nations and a better world,” So, the opinions that do not help to "better understand" and "build stronger communities" do not belong to Rise Up? I can imagine articles that explore connections between race and illegal immigration being portrayed as weakening "immigrant communities" and therefore unfit to print. Somehow, the more progress is being made by the advancements of Liberalism, the less free speech and other freedom are left for us to freely exercise. Unless, of course, one wants to express "politically correct" opinions - then the speaker may have all the freedom of speech he wants.

Will this magazine promote a "conversation" or a "sermon"? The latter is the vibe that I'm getting from the cover...

Moments ago I finished reading my morning Chicago Tribune and read the supplement entitled "Rise Up." I am elated that such a magazine will allow many to acknowledge our most hidden insecurities and biases that seemingly exist even beneath the conscious level of our soul. It is my belief that if we share any indifference (mental, emotional,or behaviorally) toward another being based on race, ethnicity, economic statuts, gender, lifestyle choice, or even political and religious choices is probably indicative of the need to RISE UP to face that indifference and attack the underlying cause be it real or assumed. After reading this publication, I believe this will be the catalyst that will challenge all of us to RISE UP to our greatness and see the greatness within every other being and realize our oneness. As the walls of FEAR are broken down,I believe we will see LOVE permeate this universe with a bond so strong that No more prejudice or intolerance will ever be able to stand wihout an individual inviting it into the mind. So congrats to the editor and as we (earthly spiritual beings) are evolving, I trust that this magazine will continue to help us to evolve into a higher state of consciousness.
