Layoffs at UBM Group
Cuts are strategic, not reflective of TechInsights’ performance, CEO says.
United Business Media's TechInsights group this week has laid off about 10 staffers from several of its products, including at its EE Times title, FOLIO: has learned. The positions were across the board, including sales, editorial and production.
According to TechInsights CEO Paul Miller, the layoffs were strategic and not tied to the current performance of any specific business unit.
"Since the launch of TechInsights in late February we have been actively reviewing our business operations in light of our strategic direction," Miller wrote in an e-mail to FOLIO:. "The staffing changes made this week are a result of these reviews and reflect the need to adjust our customer engagement model to better suit our customer's needs and to shift the geographic distribution of our resources to optimize our operational model."
Despite the job cuts, Miller says TechInsights also is actively hiring in "other functional areas." A spokesperson declined to comment on specific layoffs.
In February, UBM announced a major restructuring of CMP Technology, effectively transforming the company into four separate businesses that will be led by four different CEOs. One of those groups was TechInsights, which formerly was CMP's Electronics Group. The dramatic restructuring came nearly two months after Steve Weitzner, who was moved from CEO to chairman earlier this year, left the company in January for rival publisher Ziff Davis Enterprise.
