Greenspun Plans ‘Category Crushing’ Web Portal

Vegas first, New York next.

EXCLUSIVE

Greenspun Media, publisher of Las Vegas Life, Vegas magazine and 15 other Vegas-related publications, is planning to launch a “category crushing” Web site on Memorial Day weekend.

According to Greenspun president Michael Carr, the site, part of which is already active through Greenpun’s Las Vegas Sun newspaper, will be an interactive portal of information on Vegas restaurants, sporting events, schools and “everything hyperlocal.”

“We will take the entire playpen in which we have to play with our 17 local publications and converge the information to create a portal of everything related to the city,” Carr says. Each publication’s Web site, according to him, will have a “front door” to the interconnective site.

Carr says a user will be able to search for a local music event and hear a soundbite of the performer; set up a text, phone or email reminder; get a 360-degree view of the venue; make a reservation and even text members of the portal’s Facebook application about how long the line is or with photos from event.

“Nobody’s doing that. Nobody,” says Carr. “Yahoo, New York magazine may be doing a piece of it, but we’re doing the whole thing. We’ll invest in the infrastructure. That’s why it’s going to be a category crusher.”

Carr says the initiative will create joint sales opportunities for his company, as well widen the pool of current and potential advertisers. One way, Carr says, is to up-sell a restaurant by offering to include its menus, a video of the venue and a link to the restaurant’s Web site within the portal.

Greenspun is developing a scalable infrastructure and plans to roll out similar portals in its 15 other markets through this year and next, starting in New York with its Niche Media titles Gotham and The Hamptons. “It’s a process, not an event,” says Carr.

Has anyone ever seen Greenspun's other websites ? They are f'in pathetic. Before you announce you are going to build a "category crusher" to your peers -- and base your thoughts of success around aggrevation of print media readers to a new media platform, you should know what you're talking about, and maybe have some track record of execution. And by the way... text / email reminders / sound bite video & audio... menu pages... who's NOT doing that ?

The company's recently relaunched newspaper site is pretty good. It is definitely updated more than any other news site in Las Vegas, high-def video that goes full screen, some interesting databases (like the flight-delays database) and lots of other things like that. The site looks pretty good, even tough it seems like a little bit of a New York Times rip-off from a design standpoint. http://www.lasvegassun.com/ In the newspaper world, it's not a huge secret that they have been spending a ton of cash recently to put together a pretty impressive web team basically from scratch. There is a rumor that seems pretty credible that they are hiring close to 50 new web people in 2008. I saw a couple of folks from the Sun speak in San Francisco this week, and it was definitely the most impressive local news site I've seen. If those are the folks who are building the sites that this guy is talking about, then I have got to believe that they are going to do something interesting.

Sounds nice enough. Not sure that they can say that no one else is doing that. Maybe no one else in the Las Vegas market... I'll be interested to see it in practice. Most of what he mentions is nothing new. The newspaper site is fair enough, but I, too, see the similarities to the NYT.
it's still just a news site...

Saw the new Las Vegas Sun site... it looks great, reads well, advertising is laid out nicely and minimally intrusive. However, it's only new to Vegas (and it's only a news site!). Being in NYC... this is 3 years ago type of stuff. Maybe Carr meant that, but he should clarify if so. Vegas is a secondary media market at best, so hat's off to them for the investment - but "category crushing" ? I have to agree with most of dot-commer's thoughts as well. Greenspun and Niche Media... print, print, print (and events) - let's see what they can do in e-media. It's a little early for them to be touting unique e-media products.
