American Media Inc.’s Country Weekly has become the latest magazine to publish a single-sponsored issue.
In recognition of those who are serving in the U.S. military, Country Weekly published a newsstand-only edition of the December issue called “Salute to America and Our Troops.” Ford was the sole advertiser in the 72-page issue and agreed to pay for a number of the special issues to be shipped to troops overseas.
“We saw this special issue as a great way to make an impact and honor our country’s everyday heroes,” said Ford Truck/SUV communications manager Eric Peterson. Ford’s ads feature the 2009 F-150 pickup truck.
The “Salute to America and Our Troops” issue is the first in a series of seven standalone, newsstand-only issues of Country Weekly, AMI said in a statement.
Country Weekly joins a small but growing list of publishers to turn over their magazines to a single sponsor. In October, New York sold 24 front-of-book advertising pages to European bank HSBC. In August, ABC Television sponsored an issue of TV Guide. Perhaps most famously, Target sponsored an entire issue of the New Yorker in 2005.
