New Yorker Leads National Magazine Awards Field with 12 Nominations

New York magazine receives nine, Esquire one.

The list of finalists for the 2008 National Magazine Awards—the magazine world’s equivalent of the Oscars—is out, and the New Yorker leads the field with 12 nominations.

Adam Moss’ New York magazine—which snagged five awards out of its seven nominations in 2007—received nine.

Shockingly, perennial contender Esquire—which garnered seven nominations last year—received just one.

Twenty-four other titles received multiple nominations, including Vanity Fair (6), GQ (5), National Geographic (5), The Atlantic (3), Popular Mechanics (3), T: The New York Times Style Magazine (3), The Virginia Quarterly Review (3) and Wired (3).

Aperture, BusinessWeek, Domino, the Economist, Field & Stream, Gourmet, Harper’s Magazine, Martha Stewart Living, Men’s Health, Mother Jones, the Nation, New York Times Magazine, People, O, The Oprah Magazine, Slate and W each received a pair of nods.

First-time finalists include Nerve Media's Babble.com, Bloomberg Markets, Budget Travel, Chow, Domino, Good, Paste, Play and T (the New York Times sports and style magazines), Radar and Condé Nast Portfolio.

According to the American Society of Magazine Editors, this year's awards competition drew 1,964 entries from 333 print and online magazines.The winners of the 42nd annual competition will be announced at a ceremony at Lincoln Center in New York on May 1.
