Active Interest Media Acquires Outdoor and Fitness News Company
Enthusiast publisher continues buying spree.
Backpacker magazine publisher Active Interest Media has acquired SNEWS, a news network serving the outdoor and fitness markets. SNEWS publishes magazines such as GearTrends and eFitBiz.
"With this strategic alliance, AIM becomes a leading source of news, content and communication for both the engaged media consumer and the businesses who want to reach them," AIM president and CEO Efrem Zimbalist III said in a statement.
In 2007, AIM completed seven acquisitions, including the purchase of Rodale's Backpacker for $14 million and Restore Media's Old-House Journal and Old-House Journal's New Old House titles. The company also acquired Yoga Journal in 2006.
"We are actively looking for special interest media properties that fit within the segments we're in, healthy living, home and arts, marine, and outdoor," AIM COO Andrew Clurman wrote in an e-mail to FOLIO:. "SNEWS is a great complement to Backpacker's coverage of the outdoor industry.¬† We're exploring how SNEWS might serve as a model for b-to-b media in our other markets."
SNEWS will continue to operate from it Grass Valley, California office and will retain a number of its senior staffers, including former San Jose Mercury News reporter Therese Iknoian and author Michael Hodgson. AIM, which also publishes Vegetarian Times and Better Nutrition, is based in El Segundo, California.
The deal was completed on December 21. The terms were not disclosed.
