Paper Companies Make Environmental Push

Stora Enso touts triple “green” certification.

Paper companies continue to broaden their environmentally-friendly offerings. Earlier this month, European paper supplier M-real announced that its Kirkniemi Mill in Finland, which produces "Galarie Lite" and "Galarie Brite" coated papers, for the first time received Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) accreditation, which addresses, among a number of issues, the mill's environmental effect.

Meanwhile, global paper supplier Stora Enso announced that its "Productolith Pts." sheet is the latest of the company's stable of products to receive three chain-of-custody certifications from industry environmental groups. The product also now uses 10 percent post-consumer recycled content.

"This signifies that the fiber being used in that particular product has been tracked and accounted for all the way from the forest through its production," Stora Enso marketing director Jeffrey Troll tells FOLIO:. "You'll see other products that say they are certified but that doesn't mean that there's a chain of custody that's been established, only that one step in the process is certified. Maybe their forest lands are certified or their mill is certified. When you get a chain of custody certification means that every process all the way has been certified. That's important to us." The three certifying groups are the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC).

"Productolith Pts." sheet, a coated cover stock, is typically used for heavier weight print applications, shipping and special projects, according to Troll. The stock features high brightness and refined semi-gloss printing surface, and is available in C1S and C2S and calipers ranging from 6 to 14 pt. The triple certified shipments were effective December 1. Other Stora Enso tripe certified products include "Centura" and the "Arbor" line of products.
