SPD Director Sentencing Scheduled for Friday
Bride Whelan, the former Society of Publication Designers director, convicted of grand larceny this past August, will receive her sentence Friday morning in New York. Whelan was convicted for spending over $150,000 on personal purchases on SPD credit cards from 1999 to 2004, which included airline tickets, hotel rooms, makeup, medical exams and a $2,500 fur coat.
UBM's PR Newswire Buys U.S. Newswire
PR Newswire, a division of United Business Media, today announced that it has acquired U.S. Newswire from Medialink Worldwide Inc. for $19 million and an earnout of up to $4 million.
The transaction will help PR Newswire significantly expand its customer base in the government and public interest sectors and gain improved distribution channels to reach media and online audiences, the company said in a statement.
In addition to PR Newswire, London-based, United Business Media is the parent company of U.S. based-publishing company, CMP Technology.
Action Pursuit Group Launches New Shelter Title
Cottages and Bungalows, the latest shelter launch from Action Pursuit Group, will focus on historic homes built from the 1890's to the 1950's. The magazine will cover how-to projects and restorations, and provide detailed information on period kitchens and baths, arts and crafts, and home accessories.
ALM Creates New Events Division
New York-based ALM has launched a new conference and trade show division, Unified Group. It will host more than 300 conferences and two industry tradeshows in the U.S., as well as conferences in Europe and Asia. The new group will combine the offerings of the Strategic Research Institute, which ALM acquired earlier this year; ALM Events for legal professionals and managers; Insight Information's business conferences in Canada; and the RealShare conference series produced by ALM's Real Estate Media Division.
Stuart M. Williams, who joined ALM as part of the Strategic Research acquisition, will serve as senior vice president and head of the division. The events cross a number of industries, including law, finance, natural resources, life sciences, multi-cultural marketing, real estate and healthcare.
Scholastic Title Celebrates 75 Years, 93 Year-Old Editor Celebrates 753rd Issue
Scholastic Coach and Athletic Director Magazine is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, while its 93 year-old, editor-in-chief Herman L. Masin celebrates his 753rd issue and counting from his 70 years working for the magazine. Publisher Bruce Weber, who joined the magazine in 1965 as Masin's editorial assistant, celebrates his 25-year run as publisher. The magazine is celebrating its anniversary with a special issue.
New Glamour Web Site Allows Readers to Critique Others' Fashion Choices
Glamour magazine's dos and don'ts feature is moving online and enabling readers to upload their own dos and don'ts pictures. Blip.tv is building the consumer-generated fashion photo gallery to be featured on Glamour.com, according to a news release from blip.tv. Visitors to the "Don'tspotting site" can upload photographs of fashion dos and don'ts they spot on the street, comment on photos and rate them from five happy "do" faces, to five black-barred "don't" faces.
Registered users can post unlimited photos by uploading them from their computers or sending them in from a cell phone. Users can categorize, rate and comment on their own photos and those submitted by others.
The site allows for sorting of pictures from highest to lowest rankings and under categories, such as pants, editor's choice and "cute," according to the news release. The site will rank photos according to how many people click on them and the average rating of each photo. This software developed by blip.tv allows users to keep track of who is viewing, commenting on and rating their photos.
Active Interest Media Launches Wild Oats
California-based Active Interest Media will launch a new custom publication focused on natural and organic lifestyles for Wild Oats Markets Inc. titled Wild Oats. The launch issue is slated for January 2007 and will join AIM's Healthy Living Group, which includes recently acquired Yoga Journal and Vegetarian Times, as well as Better Nutrition and Optimum Wellness.
The magazine will be published bi-monthly and will be sold at Wild Oats retail locations nationwide. It will debut at 100,00 copies per issue, with a projected 300,000 readership.
The ANA and the Pohly Company Redesign Advertisers Association Magazine
The Association of National Advertisers and custom publishing house, The Pohly Company, have redesigned member magazine, The Advertiser. The redesigned magazine will debut today at the Annual Masters of Marketing Conference in Orlando, Florida.
The bi-monthly title, which is distributed to 25,000 members of the ANA, was redesigned due to feedback from readers and focuses on three major areas: Editorial, design and media sales.
RMS Media Launches Ocean Home
Boston-based RMS Media Group, a custom and luxury, magazine publishing company, has launched its second original title, Ocean Home, under its Luxury Publications Division. Ocean Home is a quarterly, luxury real estate and lifestyle title for the oceanfront homeowner, buyer or developer, and follows on the heels of the company's inaugural title, North Shore Magazine.
The magazine's staff consists of former Elite Traveler editor Stacy Small, who will join as editor; former Robb Report and Elite Traveler publisher Rick Sedler; and former Robb Report exec Hugh Malone. The magazine's publisher is Rod Hunsaker.
Pace Communications Launches New Catalog
Custom publishing company, Pace Communications has launched a new catalog for the U.S. quinceanera market, Quinceanera Elegante. The catalog and accompanying online catalog will target the nearly 400,000 Hispanic girls turning 15 each year and will feature accessories for all types of Quineanera parties. It will be printed in Spanish and English.
Fast Company Writer Wins Women in Journalism Award
Jennifer Reingold, senior writer at Fast Company, has been awarded The Newswomen's Club of New York's Front Page Award for excellence in journalism. Reingold was recognized for her September 2005 cover story, "The Fall and Rise of David Pottruck." She will be honored at the Club's annual dinner to be held October 26 at the National Arts Club in Manhattan.
